I’m a huge fan of travel bags so the The ‘Cassi Go Home’ duffel bag by way of Gold Coast Trading is tickling my fancy no end! What’s also pretty cool is that Cassi was one of the first contributers to thenublack Q&A and CGTC creator Emeka Alams has also graced his prescence on the blog last month – could this be the bag for future revolutionaries? I believe so!
It’s currently on pre-order and I think you should get one…lol.

Wow…Sesame Street is 40! I don’t remember the last time I watched the show but it does bring back some memories. They had some good celebrities on there…Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles! Anyways I was digging through the archives of YouTube and found some classic videos.

who and what inspires you?
Im definitely an equal opportunity inspiree. I get tickled and influenced by just about anything in my circumference. Whether it’s the mismatched subway passenger or the pile of horse shit interestingly resting on the curb – i enjoy the creative reactions my imagination provides. Of course, living in NYC caters to this well.
I also strongly believe in ‘input dictates output’. There’s an overwhelming amount of amazing work out there in the world – and we have access to so much of it instantly. For me, taking in that daily dose of various perspectives from a variety of artists and disciplines helps to directly evolve my own creative outlook(s).

Malcolm X is up there under the ‘past icon’ category. Industrial designer Chris Bangle for the ‘present’.

Jackie Ormes, nee Zelda Mavin Jackson, was a journalist, artist, socialite and progressive political activist, a well-known figure in Chicago’s black community in the ’50s and ’60s. She was also, as the subtitle of Nancy Goldstein’s biography indicates, the first African-American woman to write and draw widely distributed comic strips: four different series, published between 1937 and 1956 in black newspapers including The Pittsburgh Courier and The Chicago Defender. Ormes was well ahead of her time; the first black woman to create a syndicated daily strip for mainstream papers was Barbara Brandon-Croft, whose “Where I’m Coming From” didn’t appear until 1989…Read the rest here

Introduce yourself
Hey! I’m Aindrea, and to sum up I’m an overachieving perfectionist who finds solace in the art of fashion. I’m a fashion journalist and I’m 15 years old. For reals. I’ve attended London Fashion Week since I just turned 14 and haven’t looked back since. My life is a constant juggle of academia and fashion. One day I’m studying Math, the next I’m mingling with the likes of Kate Moss and other prominent members of the fashion industry. I’ve shown a collection at fashion week as part of London Fashion Week, covered major shows and has published fashion articles in magazines and online. But it all boils down to passion and determination. Fashion is my past, my present, and my future.
At the moment, I’m concentrating on passing my GCSE’s as well as juggling a couple of fashion projects and hopefully looking for an internship next Summer.
Fav lyric from a song

Who and what inspires you?
Life. I’m lucky enough to be immersed in an industry buzzing with inspirational figures and bursting the seams with creativity. I adore the pretty things. The Forties. A time of understated sexiness. Of lace, pearls and velvet. Of romance. I’m inspired by the beauty of my surroundings.
Past & present icons
I have a complete obsession with Edie Sedgwick and Marilyn Monroe. There’s something about them. Maybe it was their killer fashion sense or trouble souls. Beautiful disasters with a touch of glamour.

Introduce yourself
Hi, I’m Harlem and I’m a write-a-holic, a condition most bloggers will be familiar with. It’s been about 20 something years since I made my first attempt as a kid to write, or should I say, scribble a book. I never did finish or even get past the first page but that moment was the seed that grew into my current role as an editor, stationery junkie and the girl behind the Harlem Loves blog.
Fav lyric from a song
“Sometimes I like to rock neon” from Neon by Amanda Diva. Amanda Diva cracks me up and I love this song but this line especially makes me smile.
Who and what inspires you
My family and friends are the people that inspire me most, they’re a real mixed bunch and are incredibly supportive of me and my ambitions. In terms of *what* inspires me, I’d say mostly things that conjure up some kind of emotion… art that makes me dream, songs that make me smile, stories that make me think, clothes that stop me in my tracks or stationery that makes me crave… I honestly can’t explain my love of stationery but it’s there.
Icons, past and present
Oooh tough question. I’m generally not really one for having personal icons or famous people I look up to but I made an exception for Michelle Obama. Just seeing her in the White House as First Lady makes me smile and not to mention she visited my old secondary school when she was in the UK. Ever since I saw a YouTube clip of her on The View, I’ve admired her grace, humour and obvious intellect. I think she’s fab.
The nublack philosophy/mantra according to Harlem Loves
Always take some time out to compliment somebody. Compliments are one of those free gems in life where we can make someone happy with the smallest amount of effort. I think it’s worth doing a lot more. So whilst I’m here I thought I should take a little time to say I think thenublack is a great concept with a world of creative genius behind it

Perfect Imperfection is the premise for this book. I recall first hearing the notion and believing it to be ridiculous. By default, an imperfection can not be perfect, otherwise how could it be an imperfection? I sceptically read the book and as I did so I began to understand the concept being laid out in front of me.
REFLEX is the title of the book – a reflex to what you ask? Emerzy D Corbin, the author of Reflex, recalled many occasions of complementing women of colour on their appearance only to be reprimanded for the comment or for the complement to be re-buffed.
Emerzy maintains that many black women can not take a complement. Our “reflex” is to deny the affirmation of our person that was bestowed upon us by another, only to point out our views on our own flaws. Perfect imperfection comes from loving that which we perceive to be flawed and embracing it.
You could call this a universal law, one that all women should follow. So then why have a book aimed at, and dedicated to “the black woman,” regarding this matter. Well that would be because black women, particularly those raised in the western world are raised believing that an African/Afro Caribbean concept of beauty is not relevant, as it is in fact not beautiful at all. We learn from childhood, that a straight nose, straight hair, light skin and light eyes are all more attractive then whatever beauty we, as Black women are genetically pre-disposed to.
Perfect Imperfections, I have come to understand is an idea, for us as black women to see the beauty in what would be called by the western media an Imperfection. Reflex aims to remind us that what we dislike about ourselves, ultimately others are envious of. Do not forget many years ago we were mocked for our full lips and now injections are given to re-create what we naturally have.
Reflex is the start of a movement in celebration of all aspects of black beauty, that’s why you will find no airbrushing within its pages, nothing filtered or altered to enhance beauty, we must embrace and love what we have. So the next time you are given a complement ladies, please just graciously accept it, absorb it and know it to be true.

Yes, you read right, I have video instructions on how to be Black….according to Tracy Morgan that is!
I had a conversation with someone about people that ‘act Black’ – like if I speak good English I somehow revoke my pass into Blackdom, or if I’m Black and I live in the suburbs (which I do, it’s my parent’s fault) then I’m less of a Black person. It made me chuckle because there’s an guy who works in a store near where I live and when you go inside it’s “yea B, what’s good b”. Would you consider that to be him “trying to act black?”…
Being Black to me is more than me walking and talking a certain way, although it seems like a commodity to some it’s something that’s I can’t get an upgrade for after 18 months, and was and IS still trying to get the full recognition it deserves.
…The guy is of Asian descent and the store he works in is one of those “urban” stores that sells cubic zirconia Jesus Pieces and airbrushed Looney Toons Timbs (I know you been in or a LEAST passed by one). Maybe he’s taking the ‘When in Rome’ thing too far…who knows, lol.

I have to pay homage to the site as the podcasts on there have really opened up my musical tastebuds instead of driving me to turn on the radio which I rarely listen to. Also at work they play XFM so although I know every popular indie song to date it doesn’t make me feel great hearing it non stop, so RappersIKnow…thank you

I recall my first Live concert was 3T (Michael Jackson’s nephews…don’t hate they had great eyebrows!). Thinking back on the experience, besides leaving with the sounds of a million screaming girls in my ear I don’t remember being at a point in my musical life where I could really say OMG this is REALLY what live music sounds like.
Having seen Van Hunt at 93 Feet East before I brought his album, I was really blown away at the difference between his live performance and what came out on CD. Something about the instruments and rawness of vocals and energy of Van and his band members during their live performance was kind of more contained on the disc but I still love it anyway.
And so to this podcast, taken from Marc Mac’s (one half of the collective 4Hero) website – not a sample or cheesy hook in sight, just great muscial compostion…

Last weekend I had a friend of mine drop into conversation with another person that I was going to be the female Spike Lee – it made me laugh. I can see it now, my version of Do The Right Thing…Radio Raheem walking down the street holding an ipod rocking a pair of Air Max 90s, lol.
This time last year at the BFI’s 51st Film Festival I was taking film advice from Forrest Whitaker (he has great taste in Sneakers and is also a vegetarian), so I was oh so eager to go back this year to see what they had on offer.
Made in the 80s, and set in Brixton, Franco Rosso’s Babylon was brought back to cinema for the first time since it’s release.
“Babylon revolves around the lives of a group of young black people in inner London, focusing on Blue, played by Brinsley Forde, car mechanic by day and toaster for a reggae sound system by night.
Director Franco Rosso wrote the script with Martin Stellman (who also co-wrote Quadrophenia) but much of the script was developed, and written in Patois with the involvement of the young black people whose lives was the source material for the film. Right from the start the mission of Babylon was to show what life was really like for poor young black people in inner London.
Not to be defeated Franco Rosso went on a long drawn out process that took the best part of five years to raise the cash to make Babylon into an independent movie.
Babylon may have been a low budget movie, but there is nothing cheap about it. The Cinematography was handled by Chris Menges – a man with a very impressive filmography before and after Babylon. From Kes to TheKiling Fields, to The Mission right up to Notes On A Scandal. Menges gives the film a classy but gritty portrayal of London, his shots of night-time and on the tube are especially vivid. His work on Babylon set the benchmark for other British films that want to give you hard realism, from Naked to Nil By Mouth right up to This Is England.”
It was creepy how parts of the film echoed today’s Black society and also to see that the Black dad from Hollyoaks was one of the stars (that was more funny than creepy, lol).
Finished off with a Q&A session in which some of the guys hadn’t seen each other in over 15 years, it’s definately worth buying when it comes out on DVD (which is today!)

I remember being in my last year at uni and having a discussion with my tutors about colour in graphic design – not CYMK but whether a designer’s race or culture had an influence on their work. I ended up getting told that I wasn’t to end up as ‘the black designer doing the black project’…Needless to say my final major project was based on Jazz, lol.
As a designer who’s a female who’s also Black I’m constantly challenging myself NOT to create designs based on my culture and automatically use red yellow and green (although I have one, I’ve changed it slightly because it bothered me, lol), or to go the “urban” route and use graffiti font.
I’m always on the look out for dope Black designers because even though I don’t really mind what colour they are – if I see the work of one, I like it (most times, lol) and with 21MC it’s no different.
They’ve taken what’s been and brought it to a current place where it fits in but still pays homage to their culture – without using red, yellow and green or plastering a caribbean flag on their clothing. Their lookbook is unbelievably fly and I’m tempted to buy their whole collection!

Inspired by the idea that the medium of fashion can be used as a tool to spread social awareness and unity, The Black Cotton Collection, developed by Justice Hall, is one of the lines you need to look out for in 2007. Fresh, intelligent, and satirical designs, commenting on the African-American experience dominate tees and sneakers in the first line.
Format: Where did the idea of the Black Cotton Collection start, and how did you all come together to finally bring this idea to life?
Justice: It started with my frustration of the success of these huge companies. I‘m tired of seeing brands making money of our culture. It’s ridiculous. I watched them go to the hood, take pictures of us, profile us in their power point presentations, joke and laugh about our heritage and lifestyle, but then will turn around and sell us their brand.
What’s even more ridiculous is to see the people embrace these brands. I feel like I’m in a position to do something powerful to make a statement. So through my frustration and lack of originality in the fashion industry I birthed The Black Cotton. It was easy to come together because we are all artists fighting with bigger companies on a daily basis. It only made sense to come together and create something for ourselves.
Format: Can you tell us a little bit about the inspirations behind the graphics and art on the T-Shirts and Sneaker Customizations you produce?
Justice: The Black Cotton designs are inspired from the historical events that took place in African American heritage to the derogatory images that once devalued our culture. For example the “OLYMPIC 1968” is a design dedicated to Tommie Smith and John Carlos 1st and 3rd in the 200 meter. Respectively, they showed their solidarity for the movement on the medal podium by raising a black fist. It was events like that which made us strong back then. I believe that’s the strength we need to take back our culture. The shoes are crafted to compliment the shirts.
Format: Are there any shout outs or words of wisdom you’d like to leave our readers?
Justice: My grandmother’s generation was children of slaves. My mother’s generation was taught heritage, love and to value family. My generation was told to get an education, College, College, College. See my daughter’s generation is going to own her own business. The time is now, support!

Have no fear, the new nerd chic is here – The Black Nerds Network caters for every black rimmed spectacled, gigabit loving black person who wants to get their nerd on.
I’ve been down with the hardcore nerd movement since day one – my dad is an original nerd, he works in IT and wears glasses – occasionally wears cable knitted sweaters and sensible work shoes. My vivid memories of 56k dial up modems and Microsoft Paint contributed nicely to me becoming a Graphic Designer and an avid nerd lover.
The BLACK NERDS NETWORK, was conceived on 19.08.06 after two self confessed Nerds had an accidental meeting in at a chess congress in Shoreditch East London. One a textile designer and stylist with strong links to the Caribbean, a graduate of Chelsea School of Art in London and the other, a Producer of Music with a long history in Business, Fashion, Art and Design with strong links to Africa.
Both of these young creatives, who will remain nameless for the time being, came to the conclusion that the African/Carribean people were the only community that would promote and celebrate (outwardly anyway) a ’ghetto lifestyle’.

I’m not getting caught up in what the media or news portrays because you hear it all too often. I’m not in the habit of being a conditional supporter of Black men because even though there is some bad, I don’t feel enough positive light is given to them. Music, Fashion, Science, Business, Politics – everything basically apart from Ice Hockey, lol.
A slightly biased opinion you may say but society tells no lies (plus it’s my blog so I can say whatever I please, lol) - whether the “fashion accessory” of a WAG or brother from another mother of a round-the-way-girl in your neighbourhood – Black boys are the new cool.
You will NOT find any videos of Fiddy Cent or Omarion on here and if you do, my blog has been hacked! I’m not aiming to feature EVERY Black male musician under the age of 36 because I’d be here for a while so it’ll be one or two morsels per day.

Lewis ‘the wonderkid’ Hamilton is officially the shit (not that he wasn’t before).

BRITAIN’S Lewis Hamilton became the world’s youngest Formula One champion when he finished fifth in a dramatic Brazilian Grand Prix today.
Needing only a top-five finish to take the title, Hamilton, 23, clinched it only on the final lap of 71 when German Timo Glock lost 18 seconds in his Toyota and slipped behind him. Until then, the title looked to be going to hometown hero Felipe Massa, who won the race. As well as being the youngest champion, Hamilton also became the first black Formula One title holder on a stirring afternoon in front of an impassioned 100,000 crowd at the Interlagos circuit.
“It’s amazing, I can’t get my breath back,” Hamilton said before his father, Anthony, ushered him away. Hamilton senior had earlier told television: “What can I say. I can’t say any more. I really can’t find any words. “It’s absolutely great and that’s a shame that the crowd are doing this (booing). They should be sportsmen. We have the championship and let’s look forward to the next one.”
So all that creation of a racist website…what a waste of time because it came to NOTHING – just like during the civil rights days and when Black British people came to Britain…just made us stronger. This win is a big two fingers up to all those ignorant haters (pardo my french).

I know I’m steering away from a celebration of thenublack but this video needs to be talked about. Why why WHY?!
Don’t get me wrong – I love Dizzee (or ‘Mr Rascal’ as Jeremy Paxman likes to call him), I think he’s a good example of dope British music, but this was just tomfoolery.
They might as well have got a couple of white boys in blackface – yes I really did think it was that bad. I mean he made good points but it was just the delivery. It was like Obama’s efforts were totally dashed. They could’ve chosen a handful of other Black British artists to chat but no, they chose this dude.
His point about Hip Hop being the reason he was chosen I half agreed with. Hip Hop is a predominantly Black genre of music so of course those kinds of artists would be gunning for Obama. I feel Obama acknowledged Hip Hop (partly to do with him being Black and American I’m not sure), but he wasn’t totally on it when Ludacris starting talking sideways about Hilary so he was smart with it.
I felt a bit shame for Valerie Bernard to be honest. The whole ‘could it happen in Britian?’ question is a tough one. Blackness and unity with being British – it’s often avoided and I’m also not too sure about the ease of how Politicians/runners for the PM spot are chosen. Whereas in the US anyone really CAN become President, it seems a little bit more of a class/status thing over here (with a lot of PM’s having gone to a select number of schools).
Who knows what this Obamathon may bring to the UK. A Black Mayor I can see happening but a Black PM….let’s see what happens. I just think Paxman did it on purpose!

19 year old Alexander Rose is being interviewed about his actions against knife & gum crime after both his friend and cousin were stabbed within a year of each other.
Teamed with his love of graphic design and a desire to impliment change, he designed a logo and started giving tees away to friends and family.
As well as being a designer, he also speaks at events about his story and talks to young people about the issues that are killing of so many teenagers in the UK.
This made up for Dizzee Rascal’s tomfoolery big time – yay, more black positivity…I feel a collaboration coming on, lol.

Dunn was “spotted” in Primark in 2006 when there were few black models on magazine covers or the catwalk
Jourdan Dunn sealed a rapid rise to supermodel status last night by winning the Model of the Year title at the British Fashion Awards.
Dunn, 18, was “spotted” in Primark in 2006 when there were few black models on magazine covers or the catwalk. She has since graced the covers of Pop, i-D, Vogue and Italian Vogue for an issue dedicated to black models, and been the first black model to appear on the catwalk for Prada in 10 years.
She has also challenged the lack of ethnic diversity in the industry: “London’s not a white city… so why should our catwalks be so white? I go to castings and see several black and Asian girls, then I get to the show and look around there’s just me and maybe one other coloured face.”
Luella Bartley won Designer of the Year at the black tie event in central London; an award no doubt all the sweeter because the 35-year-old was beaten by Stella McCartney last year.
Christopher Bailey, the creative director of Burberry, won Menswear Designer of the Year for the second time running. Shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood won the newly created Emerging Talent Award for accessories, while Louise Goldin won the ready to wear equivalent, and Matthew Williamson won the best Red Carpet Designer accolade. The Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design award was presented to the milliner Stephen Jones.

“Man this hoe you can have her,
when I’m done I ain’t gon keep her
Man, bitches come and go, every nigga pimpin know”
– 50 Cent
Ah, the sweet sound of misogyny — every time I turn on the radio. And turning on the TV is even worse. Video after video on channels like BET and MTV accosts us with images of rappers throwing money at half naked women. And mainstream hip hop is more popular than ever. But if sex and violence sell — particularly when combined — there’s nothing anybody can do about it. Or, that’s what the record companies want us to believe. Fortunately, they don’t have everyone convinced.
Young filmmaker Byron Hurt is not just unconvinced, he wants to challenge the system. In his new documentary, Beyond Beats and Rhymes: Masculinity in Hip Hop Culture, Byron presents images, samples and interviews that he hopes will expose and take apart the structures of violence, hyper-aggression, and misogyny present in much of today’s hip hop.
Produced by Stanley Nelson, known for such documentaries as Marcus Garvey: Look for Me in the Whirlwind, the 60-minute film will run on PBS later this year. Not content with merely this audience, however, Byron is taking matters into his own hands by showing the film on college campuses across the nation. In speaking to him, it’s easy to see why.
“So much of the ills in our society come from the way we men define manhood,” says Byron, adding, “I want this film to really get men to question and to challenge the way we’re socialized and conditioned.”
He became familiarized with the realities of black masculinity when making the film I Am a Man: Black Masculinity in America. An anti-sexism activist, Byron has also worked for a program called Mentors in Violence Prevention for the Marine Corps where he held training, workshops, and lectures for U.S. Marines, fraternity brothers, coaches, activists, and teachers. Byron stresses the need to educate boys and men in the African-American community, in particular, about what it means to be male in our society. Encouraging such discussion, he believes, has the possibility to spark important social change….(read the rest of the article)

In Jacksonville, Fl., there’s an African American 14-year old working at improving the surgical procedure for stitching up a woman after a hysterectomy. Of all things that 14-year old young men are thinking of, surgical procedures just don’t come to mind as being in the top 10.
Tony Hansberry II is in the ninth grade and has already presented his ”findings” in front of an auditorium full of doctors as though he’s already entered the field of medicine. The project he worked on that sparked his genius was during an internship at the University of Florida’s Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research where he befriended then partnered with the center’s administrative director.
Together they proposed and demonstrated a stitching technique for hysterectomy patients with a tool called an endo stitch. This tool is not normally used for this type of surgery, but it could revolutionize the procedure enough to reduce complications and cut the surgical time.

introduce yourself
Born in Nigeria, I made a name for myself while in primary school selling my own drawn comic books but had to give it all up because my dad who was strict on education had other plans for my future which included being a medical doctor. I’m happy to say it didn’t turn out that way because I can’t stand the sight of blood and pain. I also stumbled into poetry in my early teens and wrote a few chapters of books which sadly I never finished. While making choices for a university course I thought to study architecture which was the closest I could get to making use of my creative skills but had to forgo that as well due to parental pressure. It was only recently after doing away with education and settling in to a more stable career in IT that I decided to pursue my childhood love for design and graphic art. Currently I’m nursing a project to graphically represent black/African culture/images on the internet in witty forms never seen before.
fav lyric from a song
My favorite lyric from a song is Bob Marley’s “emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our mind” from the Redemption song. This holds true for me because you can never really be free unless you first free yourself.
inspiration
My inspiration comes from hip hop, poetry and afro beat. I also find my inspiration in comedy, the arts and my African values: Harambee, Ujamaa, Ubuntu. It is my goal to make see that the contributions of the black continent to arts, design and music are forever at the forefront of public recognition; so help me God. It also inspires me to see young black talented people doing great things for themselves and the community in spite of all the over-publicized negative stereotypes.

past/present icons
My list of role models goes as far as from the US to the Zambezi. It includes Fela Kuti, Mandela, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, Kanye West, Common, Barack Obama, Michael Jordan, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Shepard Fairey, Wole Soyinka…and it goes on…and on. All these people stood for something and made themselves forces to reckon with.
thenublack according to Sam Ojene
The Nublack to me would be the finding of self and rising above all negative stereotypes to be counted a force to reckon with whatever your chosen field. The Nublack also is“each one, teach one” and that is being a source of
inspiration/positive role model to young black kids with a view to improving self worth and confidence.

I was having a conversation with quite a few people about the future of music now MJ has passed, and how scary it is that those musical geniuses of that time don’t seem to have carried on into our generation (or may have come and have brought us today’s equivalent – I’m not sure)…
Anyways I found this link (via Soul Culture) and I’m smiling…just a shame that Dwele isn’t in the same position musically that he should be. No Auto-Tune in sight a true one man band.

I have a love -hate relationship with record company e-mails. Albeit my fault for signing up but sometimes it gets a little too much and my inbox and trash bin are in close competition… The Foreign Exchange are the complete opposite, they send morsels of goodies once in a while and they’re always appreciated
We recorded this over a month ago specifically for a ?uestlove tribute party dedicated to The Purple One himself. Other than passing it off to a few DJ friends who vowed to keep it on some secret squirrel, “bet you aint up on THIS!” status, no one has ever heard it. In the wake of the incredible loss we suffered on June 25 however, this joint took on somewhat of a deeper meaning.
We decided to share it with our fans not only as a token of appreciation, but also as a way of paying respect to one of our last living musical geniuses.
Let’s not wait until tragedy strikes before we show love and gratitude to our heroes, people. Give them their flowers while they live.
This one’s for you, Mr. Nelson. You are loved and appreciated.
Enjoy!

Introduce yourself
My name is Jenn and I’m from Brooklyn, NY. By day I work in the Insurance Industry and after 5pm starts my day. I like long walks on the beach (lol)… I have been describe as a social butterfly but that’s cause I love people and I love to talk. I’m a traveller, photographer (for a blog called gutsglamgrace), philanthropist, baker, daughter, sister, and a lover not a fighter.
Favourite lyric from a song:
I‘m holding on to my freedomCan’t take it from me
I was born into it and it comes naturally
I’m strumming my own freedom
Playing the God in me
Representing His glory
Hope He’s proud of me!
~Golden by Jill Scott
Who/what inspires you:
There is a quote that has inspired me : ”Are you living or existing?”
My inspiration is to live and take advantage of life and all it has to offer.
The nublack philosophy/mantra according to Jennifer Daniel
Black History in the Making – pass it on..
Who are your past/present icons and why
Well of course I’m gonna be real and say Jesus Christ for obvious reasons. My “icons” are people who overcame adversity and strived when they had obstacles, kept their head high when people try to bring it down and fought the good fight.
I love Oprah; she’s awesome although some people aren’t feeling her. She has done her thing and didn’t forget the people after she made it. Philanthropy is something I’m big on and I’m not a fan of people with billions of dollars that do nothing to help those who helped them get rich.
Lastly, I love the OBAMAS! They are a remarkable couple who represent family, success and were hard work can take you. Beyond President Obama’s leadership skills he is also showing that the Black Family can have a dad in their household and he is raising bar and creating a standard for present/future dads to adhere to.

As if you need more reasons to follow ?uesto on twitter, here’s another gem he released from his account last night. Apparently he has taken on the challenge of repurposing “unusable” records by flipping them into something fresh. In this case, Philip “Tubbs” Michael Thomas‘ “She’s A Liar” is the victim. Watch ?uesto go through the entire process above, and download the end result below. It’s incredible to think that this is the type of stuff The Mighty Afro creates when he’s “bored.”

Introduce yourself
Orion Engleton and I’m a graphic designer. I’m originally from Belize, Central America by way of – I now live in Brooklyn, Tampa FL – I lived there for more than 10 years.. and loved it.. but it was time to try something new.
Favourite lyric from a song:
Anything from OutKast or Jill Scott would suffice but I do like a good guitar riff from any classic rock band – like The Rolling Stones or even Grand Funk Rail Road.. or Hendrix.
Who and what inspires you:
I see my life is a path that has many curves and bumps each turn with its own icon placed to inspire me to move forward.. Some of them have names, my mom, my dad, cool friends, Guy Kawasaki who wrote the book “The Art of the Start” he actually responded back to a long random email I sent him , with very kind words for a young confused entrepreneur (me). Even the occasional random person on the street that so happens to say the weirdest thing that makes you think ‘wow that made sense’, the right song playing on the radio at the right time. Basically I draw inspiration from life being lead at pure coincidence and divine guidance.
The nublack philosophy/mantra according to Orion
Be Relentlessly resourceful and your stars will align.

Today would have been 10 years since the tragic death of two young Guinea boys who wanted to make a better life for themselves in Europe.
Yaguine Koita (aged 14) and Fodé Tounkara (aged 15) were stowaways who froze to death on a Sabena Airlines Airbus A330 (Flight 520) flying from Conakry, Guinea, to Brussels, Belgium, on 28 July 1999. Their bodies were discovered on 2 August in the airplane’s rear right-hand wheel bay at Brussels International Airport, after having made at least three return trips between Conakry and Brussels. The boys were carrying plastic bags with birth certificates, school report cards, photographs and a letter. This letter, written in imperfect French, was widely published in the world media.
A friend of mine recently exclaimed how pleasantly surprised she was about Alicia Keys & Wyclef Jean winning a Humanitarian Award at the BET awards and that she actually seemed to be doing a good amount of work and not just taking photos and generally milking the “celeb goes to 3rd world country and does good” opportunity, like many celebs (who shall remain shameless but nameless) often do.
Contrary to this, I was touched by this video and song created by John Legend, who founded the Show Me Campaign to end poverty through sustainable development at the individual, family, and community levels.
Let’s not all rush out and adopt orphaned village children, or start rocking Livestrong wristbands – just be inspired, reflective and always be willing to be active in working for a good cause. Although we value money, time to many – can be worth much more.
peace x

Saw this in The Evening Standard on the way to work this afternoon

When Angelina Jolie wore her blue kimono-style Max Azria dress back to front at the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards in January, only one eagle-eyed woman spotted it.
London fashion blogger Catherine Kallon, 34, scooped journalists from Vogue and Elle, as well as websites such as Instyle and People.com, to claim that Angelina had reversed the plunging neckline.
Debate raged in fashion circles until Angelina’s stylist finally stepped in to confirm the switch.
It was a moment of triumph for Kallon — and her blog, www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com. Many people assume Catherine is American but actually she’s a north London girl and her fashion HQ is her modest rented studio flat in Holloway.

Okay kids, let’s start this music month with a little lesson in sampling…no I’m not about to berate your favourite rapper for being incredibly lazy – just listen, learn and enjoy x
———————————————-
Originally played out on BBC Radio1, this mix is Questlove the DJ (as opposed to Questlove the drummer) at his best. When he’s not looking after the backbeat for Philidelphia group The Roots he’s behind the ones and twos and no doubt a lot of you have caught him DJing here and there.
This mix brings you through the many different eras and styles of sampling as well as through the many different styles of original music that questlove has in his impressive record collection (check the video!).
Take a peek at the tracklisting below and it’s obvious what we mean about the different styles of sampling – Kanye, Premier, Fatlip, Dre, Large Pro, Jay Dee, Prince Paul, Q-Tip… Mix that up with The Tempations, The Charmels, Willie Mitchell, Quincy Jones, Labi Siffre, Ahmad Jamal and War and what you end up with is a little 60 minute history lesson on the breaks and a nice reminder what a DJ is supposed to be doing to boot. - Choice Cuts

Just got back from the ICA after watching this movie and I have to say it almost moved me to tears. Now there have been stories of Black couples having white looking children and vice versa but throw Apartheid South Africa into the mix and it’s a WHOLE nother story.
It’s currently showing at the ICA until the 13th of August
—————————————————————————-
SKIN is one of the most moving stories to emerge from apartheid South Africa: Sandra Laing is a black child born in the 1950s to white Afrikaners, unaware of their black ancestry. Her parents are rural shopkeepers serving the local black community, who lovingly bring her up as their white little girl. But at the age of ten, Sandra is driven out of white society. The film follows Sandras thirty-year journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in a changing world – and triumphs against all odds.

Yes that’s right folks, Aml Ameen star of many a UK TV Drama and both Kidult and Adulthood is set to star in ‘Red Tails’ – movie based around the lives of the Tuskegee Airmen.
The movie is being produced by George Lucas and is also being directed by Anthony Hemmingway (who directed the Wire)…so Aml is not doing things by half as you can see.
The film has a number of other young Black actors/entertainers in it including Jazmine Sullivan. It’s currently still in production but I’ll definately be on the lookout for a trailer.
*thinking aloud* maybe Aml will get a pseudo American/British accent like Idris Elba, lol.

I’m Zee, a college graduate and a grad school escapee. I’m 22 yrs old, half-Nigerian and half-Malaysian, a dancer sans training and a writer sans boundaries. I write secret poems and public blogs, dirty memoirs and rambling pieces. I’m a supporter of free love and orange Tic-Tacs. I’m out to change the world and rescue the distressed.
Fave lyric from a song:
My favourite lyrics are from the song Booty by Erykah Badu. The first couple of verses always crack me up. You gotta listen to the whole song though to get what she’s actually saying.
(I love me some Jesus though, don’t get it twisted)
Who and what inspires you:
My friend and fiance, Lobster, who taught me how to be free, how to stop being afraid of what other people think, and how to be faithful to myself, inspire me. My blog co-author who taught me the value of true friendship by coming back into my life after a falling-out and allowing me to be my unadulterated self, unconditionally. I see people in my life who make me want to become a better person just by the sweetness of their spirits (Cara Mia) and they inspire me daily.

Ken Saro-Wiwa- a Nigerian national hero, Prince (yes, The Artist), The Cheshire Cat.
The nublack philosophy/mantra according to Zee

My accent might speak to you of the midwest US but trust and believe, the blood that flows in my veins is green and white. I blog, therefore I am…
fav lyric from a song
“So come here and get nice while I lick your ear,
Put your legs over there and kinda swing on the chair,
I swear you look wicked with your panties in your hair”
If Lovin’ You is Wrong – Faithless
who and what inspires you
Everyday people inspire me. My friends, my family… I’m especially inspired by my co-author Z who has always danced to the beat of her own drum regardless of the ructions her free spirited gyrations might cause. If I had just a fraction of the bravery she has, I’d own the world by now… it’s just taking me a bit longer. At the moment, my driving force is my desire to never be dependent on anyone for anything…ever.
who are your icons, past and present
Nelson Mandela. He showed what could be achieved with perseverance and without violence. My buddy Maestro. He said he was going to do something and he did. He’s only my age and already he’s well on his way to building an empire.
the nublack philosophy/mantra according to Ofe
Don’t be afraid to be different/happy. The people that whisper about you are bored and bitter. They are jealous of you for having the courage to break free from the norm while they remain caged by their little minds. If you wake up and feel you want to walk around in an evening dress and clown shoes, go for it. People will talk about you anyway, why not give them something to talk about?

Eight-year-old twins from Berkshire have passed an A-level advanced mathematics exam.
Peter and Paula Imafidon, who attend Calcot Junior School in Reading, took the University of Cambridge’s advanced mathematics paper.
Peter, who got a C, said he wanted to become a “successful prime minister” and Paula, who achieved a B, said she wanted to be a maths teacher.
They have three older sisters who also passed maths exams at an early age.
The twins sat the exam after taking part in an Excellence in Education programme.
The paper is more advanced than a basic maths A-level exam and is based on mathematical reasoning.

who and what inspires you
I’m first content inspired and then medium driven, meaning the story or topic comes first and the the execution. I’m inspired by the past and the present. I’m a savager and duplicator who is super fascinated with propaganda and how we as people relate to our social environments. The thin division lines between social separation are what push me to cover the topics I address in my work.
who are your icons past/present
Okay, I really admire the work of many people and would love to chat and dine with Grace Jones, Gordon Parks, Kurt Vonnegut , Robert Frank and many more but if they were wack I’d just kick em out and finish the meal w/ my Grandma Dee Dee because she’s amazing and I know that to be the truth.
the nublack philosophy/mantra according to Channel
I figure that each individual has sooo much potential and it’s important to attempt to maximize that potential by doing the very best one can possibly do at everything they do. I mean what’s the point of doing something if it’s ‘half.’ As far as advice goes, be Brave, get out there, make a ton of mistakes, get the wind knocked out out of you and keep it moving.
